Small Space Solution for College Students

Use your wall space for more than just artwork. Shelving can be a necessity for books and even in place of a nightstand. Be sure to ask your landlord before adding wall-mounted shelves, and be prepared to leave them behind when you move.

An over-the-bed shelving unit (similar to those you may have seen placed in a bathroom over a toilet) will give you some vertical storage without your having to mount anything directly into the wall.

If there's space under your bed, use it. Use shoeboxes, a rolling wire cart or plastic bins to store shoes and sweaters.

You can create extra storage under the bathroom cabinet by adding a wire organizer that fits perfectly over the door. It's great for holding cleaning supplies or hair products. Toilet paper towers are handy for storing extra rolls in the bathroom.

If you don't have a linen closet or shelves in your bathroom for towels, roll the bath and hand towels and place them in baskets.

Use the back of your door to hang items such as off-season coats, belts or even shoes in an over-the-door canvas organizer. Add hooks to the back of your closet wall to hang totes, purses, ties or scarves. You can buy adhesive hooks that can later be removed without damaging the wall.

Rethink how you fold clothes. You can likely find a lot more space in your dresser just by folding clothing more tightly and by rolling socks and underwear. Not only will you create more room, but everything will be easier to find as well.

When attending university or college, it might not be practical to completely furnish your bedroom. Consider an alternative to a dresser, such as plastic bins with drawers that can be easily stacked. For a prettier version, you can find inexpensive cube organizers with canvas bins.

Use the tops of your cabinets to store items that you don't use every day, and double up your shelving space with wire shelf risers that are great for plates, plastic food containers and more.
